Enhancing Interior Photography with these Composition & Styling Secrets

What sets a regular real estate (yawn!) photo apart from the rest? Interior photography is not only about capturing beautiful spaces, but how do you go about creating visually appealing and captivating compositions that showcase the design elements in their best light? The key is to use intentional styling and the use of effective composition. Here are some of my favourite ways to level up your photography of interior spaces with the use of props, accessories, and furniture placement to elevate the overall aesthetic.

Be mindful of Props Selection

Props and accessories can breathe life into an interior space, adding depth and personality to your compositions.

  1. Use props to tell a story or evoke a particular mood.
  2. Pay attention to scale and proportion. Be mindful of the elements and ensure that is balanced and in harmony with the surrounding elements. Avoid any distractions or imbalance.
  3. The arrangement of furniture can greatly impact the composition and flow of your interior photographs.

Identify the Main Feature

Arrange furniture around a key feature or architectural element to lead the viewer’s eye into the image.

  1. Keep the space organized and decluttered. Remove any unnecessary items or distracting elements from the frame
  2. Experiment with different angles to find the most visually pleasing composition. Move around the space and shoot from different heights to find the best perspective.
  3. Creating a sense of balance and symmetry in your compositions can make them visually pleasing.

Adding Depth and Visual Interest

  1. Use different elements, such as textiles, rugs, or artwork, to create layers in your composition. This adds depth and dimension to an otherwise flat 2D image.
  2. Incorporate architectural (or natural) elements to sub-frame your composition. This helps to add emphasis on the subject and makes the photo more captivating.
  3. Use reflective surfaces, such as mirrors or shiny materials, to capture reflections and create visual intrigue.
